The good news is that the Internet levels the playing field somewhat. You have a direct connection to the millions of people who surf the Internet daily. You don’t have to rent a shopfront or send out hundreds of thousands
of catalogs. You don’t have to lay out hundreds of thousands of dollars to get started. You have a direct line to customers, and not just to customers in one geographic area. Your buyers are potentially everywhere that
people can connect to the Internet.
Generally speaking, the type of goods that sell on the Internet are the same type of goods that sell in catalogs — clothing, electronics, sporting goods. If a potential buyer has to feel it, taste it, or see it in person in order to buy it,
it’s hard to sell it online.
The trick is to find a niche market and become the official Web site for customers in that niche. It would be a mistake to try to sell backpacking equipment because you would have to compete with brand-name online retailers
